Personally, while I certainly make sure to come back to internal association from time to time (gotta' check up on the body once in awhile), I work the best on external dissociation. In a busy race, this works wonders! My mind goes off on it's own tangent and leaves my body to do what it does best. My mind is my biggest enemy, so distract it away from the race/run and I'm a force to be reckoned with.
